See Kos -- Birthplace of Hippocrates

Kos is the second largest island of the Dodecanese and lies just off the coast of Turkey, just a short hop from Bodrum. As it’s so close to the Turkish mainland, it makes good sense to include it as a yacht charter destination when you cruise by charter gulet out of Bodrum, headed south for Rhodes and Marmaris.

The island of Kos is busy and bustling and full of shops and restaurants open every hour of the day and night. It is a good place to stock up on the local delicacy, "Tomato Preserve" -- a type of sweet jam which makes good use of the very sweet variety of tomato which grows on the island... and take in the sites associated with the forefather of modern medicine, Hippocrates, who was born here in 460 BC.

Hippocrates went on to teach many disciples the philosophy and science of medicine. His disciples, in turn, built the Asclepeion, an ancient centre for healing. Understandably, the Asclepion is the best and most-visited archaeological site on the island, and we recommend that all travellers make a short visit to this site to appreciate one of the Western world’s first true hospitals and medical schools.
If you have time during yacht charter Greece, and you are not just anchored in Kos for the overnight stop, we would also recommend that you visit the large fortress of the Knights. Kos also has two small museums and a cultural centre, so depending on how much time you have to spare, you could do a quick shop before dinner, or immerse yourself in the island's history and culture!
