Going Ashore and Seeing Tilos Island's inner Beauty!
Tilos is another afternoon and overnight stop en route from Symi to Kos during yacht charter Greece. It is quiet and quaint and therein lies its attraction. For those wishing to cruise through the Greek islands without having to face the crowds, Tilos is a "must see" destination with a simple, yet bustling harbour creating a typical Greek island backdrop of cafes, small shops and ouzeria.
Once ashore, take a bus ride to the inland town of Megaro Horio, a pretty village set on the hillside below a Medieval castle ... which is now experiencing a revival due to the return of expat Greeks to the island. It is worth visiting the small church and the museum. In the museum, you will see the fossilized remains of a dwarf elephant species -- yes, a dwarf species of Elephant, which grew to be not much bigger than a Great Dane -- which inhabited the island for millennia after it was cut off from mainland, Asia Minor.
If there is time, a stroll through the ruined village of Mikro Horio is a worthwhile excursion and you will appreciate bird song all the more for the lack of any kind of noise!
Finish off the day with a walk through Livadia, which is the wonderfully busy and bustling harbour area. It's easily to spend a couple of hours enjoying cool drinks at a seaside cafe or just wandering the streets in search of souvenirs.
Any way you look at it, Tilos has real charm, and to top it all off, you will love the colour of the water as you dive off the swimming platform adorning your Greek gulet.
