Montenegro may be a small country, but its coastline offers an extraordinary variety of scenery for a private gulet charter. From the dramatic mountains surrounding the Bay of Kotor to medieval coastal towns, secluded swimming coves and the iconic silhouette of Sveti Stefan, every day brings a different side of the Adriatic. This 7-night Montenegro gulet itinerary begins and ends in Tivat, combining the historic charm of Kotor and Perast with the beaches and atmosphere of Budva, while leaving plenty of time for swimming, relaxed lunches and slow cruising along the coast. As always with a private yacht charter, the route can be adjusted according to weather, sea conditions and your preferences.
DAY 1 — TIVAT TO KOTOR
Your Montenegro adventure begins in Porto Montenegro, Tivat, where you board your gulet in the afternoon. After settling into your cabin and meeting the crew, enjoy a welcome drink before setting sail into the spectacular Bay of Kotor. Cruise past the dramatic mountain scenery surrounding Boka Bay and continue towards Kotor. Depending on your arrival time, there may be an opportunity for your first swim along the way. In the evening, head ashore to explore Kotor's atmospheric Old Town, with its narrow medieval streets, historic churches and elegant Venetian architecture.
DAY 2 — KOTOR TO PERAST AND MORINJ
After breakfast, leave Kotor behind and continue deeper into the beautiful inner part of Boka Bay. Your first stop is Perast, one of Montenegro's most picturesque historic towns. Wander along its waterfront and take a short boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks, the famous island church just offshore. Return to your gulet for lunch before continuing towards the quieter waters around Morinj. This is a perfect afternoon for swimming, paddleboarding or simply relaxing on deck while surrounded by mountains. As evening arrives, enjoy dinner onboard in a peaceful anchorage.
DAY 3 — MORINJ TO LUŠTICA PENINSULA
Today, the scenery gradually changes as you cruise back towards the entrance of the Bay of Kotor. Stop for a swim in one of the secluded coves along the Luštica Peninsula, where clear turquoise water and rugged coastline create the perfect setting for a relaxed day at sea. After lunch onboard, continue towards the southern side of the peninsula. If you prefer to explore on land, the crew can arrange a visit to one of the small coastal villages or local attractions. Spend the evening at anchor beneath the stars, away from the busier coastal towns.
DAY 4 — LUŠTICA TO BIGOVA AND BUDVA
After breakfast, cruise south towards Bigova, a small former fishing village tucked into a sheltered bay. The calm waters make this a lovely place for a morning swim or a leisurely lunch. In the afternoon, continue along Montenegro's open Adriatic coast towards Budva. Once ashore, explore the Old Town enclosed by its historic stone walls, or enjoy the lively atmosphere of the waterfront. Budva offers plenty of options for an evening out, from traditional restaurants to stylish beach clubs.
DAY 5 — BUDVA TO SVETI STEFAN AND PETROVAC
Leave Budva after breakfast and cruise along one of the most photogenic stretches of Montenegro's coastline.
Make a swimming stop near Sveti Stefan, the tiny fortified island that has become one of Montenegro's best-known landmarks. From the water, you'll have the perfect perspective of its distinctive stone houses and red-tiled roofs. Continue south towards Petrovac, a charming coastal town surrounded by pine-covered hills. Enjoy lunch onboard or ashore before spending the afternoon swimming in one of the nearby coves. As the day winds down, find a quiet anchorage for the evening.
DAY 6 — PETROVAC TO TRSTENO AND BIGOVA
Today is all about enjoying Montenegro from the water. After breakfast, cruise north again, stopping at some of the coastline's beautiful natural coves. Trsteno Bay is an excellent place for a swim, with exceptionally clear water and a peaceful atmosphere. Continue towards Bigova, where you can spend another relaxed afternoon swimming, kayaking or enjoying the gulet's deck. For your final night away from Tivat, settle into a quiet anchorage and enjoy dinner onboard as the sun disappears behind the mountains.
DAY 7 — BIGOVA TO BLUE CAVE, KOTOR BAY AND TIVAT
Your final cruising day begins with breakfast onboard before heading towards the entrance of Boka Bay. Depending on sea and weather conditions, make a stop at the famous Blue Cave, where sunlight reflecting through the water creates an intense blue glow inside the cave. Take a swim before continuing into the sheltered waters of the bay. Cruise past Herceg Novi and along the dramatic coastline towards Perast, with plenty of opportunities for one final swim and lunch onboard. In the afternoon, continue towards Tivat and return to Porto Montenegro. Spend your final evening enjoying dinner at one of Tivat's waterfront restaurants, or choose to stay onboard and enjoy a relaxed farewell dinner with your crew.
DAY 8 — TIVAT
Wake up to your final breakfast onboard before checking out at around 09:00 AM in Porto Montenegro. Your Montenegro adventure may be over, but you'll leave having experienced a remarkable combination of dramatic mountains, historic towns, secluded bays and some of the Adriatic's most beautiful coastline.
This route is particularly appealing if you want a balance between sightseeing and time at sea. Rather than filling every day with long excursions, it leaves space for the part of a gulet holiday that many guests enjoy most: waking up somewhere beautiful, swimming before breakfast, having lunch on deck and simply following the coastline at your own pace. It also combines Montenegro's major highlights — Kotor, Perast, Budva and Sveti Stefan — with quieter places such as Bigova, Morinj and the coves of the Luštica Peninsula. And because this is a private gulet charter, the itinerary is not fixed in stone. Your captain can adjust the route according to the weather, sea conditions and what you feel like doing each day.
How many days do I need for a Montenegro gulet charter?
A 7-night charter is an excellent length for exploring Montenegro by gulet. It gives you enough time to combine the Bay of Kotor with the open Adriatic coast without spending the entire holiday cruising between destinations.
Where does a Montenegro gulet charter start?
Most Montenegro gulet charters start and finish in Tivat, particularly at Porto Montenegro. Depending on the yacht and charter arrangements, alternative embarkation points may also be possible.
What is the best time for a Montenegro gulet charter?
The main charter season generally runs through the warmer months from late spring to early autumn. June and September can be particularly attractive for guests who prefer warm weather and somewhat less summer congestion, while July and August offer the classic peak-season Mediterranean experience.
Can we change the itinerary?
Yes. One of the greatest advantages of a private yacht charter is flexibility. The captain can adapt the route according to weather and sea conditions, while your charter broker can help plan the itinerary around your interests — whether you prefer historic towns, secluded swimming spots, restaurants, nightlife or simply more time relaxing onboard.
Is Montenegro suitable for a family gulet holiday?
Absolutely. The combination of sheltered waters in the Bay of Kotor, easy swimming stops and short distances between many destinations makes Montenegro particularly convenient for families. A private gulet also gives families plenty of space to relax and enjoy the sea at their own pace.
What can we do besides swimming and sightseeing?
Depending on your gulet and crew, you can enjoy a variety of water toys and activities, including paddleboarding, kayaking, snorkelling and other watersports. On land, Montenegro offers historic towns, local restaurants, hiking opportunities and scenic viewpoints.
