But Montenegro is also a limited-supply gulet destination. Unlike Croatia, where dozens of charter gulets operate along the coast, only a small number of classic wooden yachts are based in Montenegro. This makes planning a little more specialised, and means that choosing the right yacht and booking early can be particularly important.
For travellers who want to experience Montenegro by private yacht, the reward is a spectacular combination of mountains, crystal-clear Adriatic waters, historic towns and quiet bays, all enjoyed at your own pace.
Montenegro's coastline may be compact, but it offers an extraordinary amount of scenery and variety. The Bay of Kotor is the country's best-known sailing area, surrounded by steep mountains and dotted with historic towns, churches, small villages and hidden coves. Kotor, Perast, Tivat and Herceg Novi provide a beautiful contrast between old-world Adriatic architecture and modern luxury marinas. The country's official tourism board describes the Bay of Kotor as a particularly sheltered sailing area, while the wider Montenegrin coast offers everything from historic ports and beaches to luxury marinas and secluded bays. The Bay of Kotor alone has more than 100 km of coastline and includes Kotor, Perast, Tivat and Herceg Novi, while the wider Montenegrin coast extends south towards Budva, Bar and Ulcinj.
Montenegro can be an excellent choice if you are looking for spectacular scenery, historic towns and a more compact Adriatic itinerary. However, there is an important practical difference compared with Croatia: the choice of gulets is much smaller. Only several gulets are based in Montenegro, so availability can be limited, particularly during the peak summer months. The biggest attraction is the combination of mountains, sea and history. In the Bay of Kotor, the landscape changes dramatically as you cruise. Tivat's Porto Montenegro and Portonovi provide a completely different atmosphere from the historic streets of Kotor and Perast. And because the cruising distances are relatively manageable, a week onboard can be less about constantly moving from one destination to another and more about slow travel, swimming, exploring and enjoying the yacht itself.
This is one of the most important things to understand before planning a Montenegro gulet charter. Montenegro has only a small number of gulets based locally. This is very different from Croatia, where the charter fleet is much larger. During the summer season, Croatian gulets are often committed to their regular Saturday-to-Saturday bookings, meaning that most yachts cannot simply relocate to Montenegro for a full charter. There can sometimes be an opportunity to charter a Croatian gulet on a Dubrovnik-to-Dubrovnik itinerary and include Montenegro for several days during the cruise. However, this depends entirely on the yacht's existing schedule, availability and willingness to operate that itinerary. Therefore, if Montenegro is the main destination you want to explore by traditional gulet, we recommend looking first at the small number of gulets that are actually based in Montenegro.
Another possibility is a luxury motor-sailer or other high-end yacht based in Croatia travelling down to Montenegro for your holiday. This can provide more flexibility and a higher level of luxury, but it is a completely different category of yacht and usually comes with a substantially higher budget. Because the local gulet fleet is so small, however, availability matters just as much as the weather.
